Studio Production- Briefing Notes for Panelists

During this process I was asked to create briefing notes for the presenter and the panelists, the panelists briefing notes are more basic than those given to the presenter, as some of the facts on the notes will be used in the cue cards.

Professional Practice- Music

For the promotional film we would like some upbeat music to match the action leading me to put out an advert.
We will send them footage so that they can match the music to the footage but we would like to listen to the music they have produced before as to get an idea of what they can produce.

Professional Practice- Promotional Film Concept

After looking at all the sources of research I came up with the following ideas for the promotional film-

Target Audience-

  • Parents of 4-18 year olds
  • Middle Class
Concept-
  • Message- come to this school
  • Fun place to spend a Saturday
  • Good for the money
Form-
  • Easy- simple shots, quick with music
Shooting Video-
  • Shots of the grounds and class room
  • Talking Heads?
  • Children having fun
Music-
  • Make
  • Copyright free
Shots-
  • 1 second screen time per shot

Professional Practice- Promotional Video

While looking into how to create a promotional film I decided to see how other companies made promotional films, I found a few tips from different websites-

http://www.library.kent.edu/files/SMS_Promotional_Video_101.pd- this website gave a few tips to look into what we need to do-
Pre Production-

  1. Define the Audience
  2. Develop the content
  3. Determine the form or style
  4. Write the script
  5. Create the story board
Production
  1. Shoot video
  2. Record Narration
  3. Create Graphics
  4. Find or create music
Post Production
  1. Import video
  2. Import Audio- Narration or Music
  3. Import Graphics
  4. Edit it all together

http://www.reelmarketer.com/2011/01/how-to-make-a-video/
Briefing Questions-

  1. The Purpose- What is the main core objective? Primary goal
  2. Single Thought- What is the main core message? Identify the key idea
  3. Target Viewers- Who is the primary target audience? Age? Sex? Income?
  4. Research Your Audience- Where might I reach the audience?
  5. Call to Action- What is the single action you need to make?
Promotional Video Style Elements-
  • Tone- Light Hearted or Serious?
  • People and Speech- 'Talking head' or Actor
  • Production Quality- Highly Polished or Studio set or On Location
  • Scripted or Unscripted- Candid Q&A or Scripted

A. The Director: The Visionary and Story Teller.This is who we think of when we think of the ‘hollywood’ director. This person understands vision that knows what the story is to tell, the best genre and methods to conveying that message. The director ensures that the emotions that will convey action are present and get across to the end viewer – which is why in theory this is the most important role!

B. The Producer: The Organizer and Butt-Kicker.The producer ensures all the elements for the production are procured and readied: The creative brief, a well defined script and story, perhaps a storyboard, a production checklist, set or location scouting, research, the gear, the crew, and a distribution strategy for when and how the video is released and shown.

http://monitor.icef.com/2013/04/part-1-videos-that-work-how-effective-is-your-promotional-video/
Video's fulfil a number of purposes such as;

  • Showcasing visual features of a school
  • Concisely but completely explaining the benefits of attending
  • Inspiring emotion among viewers
  • Presenting information in a way such that the viewer does not have to work hard to access.

http://www.indigoprod.com/nyc-video-production-blog/2009/05/11-things-to-consider-when-making-a-promotional-video/
10 Things to consider while making a promotional film-

  1. Nail down a strong concept- Don't copy others, the producer will be able to create it into their own.
  2. Be realistic with your concept- Keep to your budget and be realistic
  3. How long should you video be- Keep it short and sweet
  4. Brochure text is not a video script- It will sound dull in a video
  5. Casting the right spokes person- Make sure the person is good on camera
  6. As the client, be responsive to requests- Make sure that you pay attention to what the client wants
  7. Should you shoot HD- Yes
  8. Know your audience- Whats the video for? Make sure your targeting the correct audience.
  9. Don't forget the script- Finalise before production begins.
  10. Enjoy the process- Don't forget to enjoy it.

Professional Practice- Report Writing

The report for this unit will make most of the grade. My blog will hopefully provide information for my blog but there is a list of items I need to make sure I am looking at for the content;

  • Introduction- Overview of what I will be doing
  • Commission Process- How did and what did we do
  • Your Role and Duties- What you were doing and Why
  • Creative Methodology- What you did and why
  • Production Management- What have you developed
  • Future Carrer Plans- How has this project helped your future
  • Reflection- How did your work go? (critical reflection)
  • Conclusion- Sum up the experience
  • Bibliography and Images
Each part needs separate research and needs more in-depth ideas with quotes.

I will be looking to get quotes from books that talk about what it is to be a producer of a promotional film. I will be looking into people who create promotional films and the industry would schedule the films.

Professional Practice- Promotional Film Research

For our commission we are producing a promotional film for a school so I decided to look into other schools promotional films such as the Beford school which is a boading school.
Starts with natural sounds of a person entering there room and taking off their tie. This then leads from this person putting on music to a montage of pictures from different events. These events also have footage which replaces the stills. The camera is seen and acknowledged, people are often looking into the camera breaking the fourth wall. Ends with many short flashing clips.

Burnside Primary School;

This video is more based around an interview with the head teacher which has footage over the top of the school and its pupils running around. The music in this is classical, making the video slower and having a slower edit. This concept is different to Bedford as Bedford is more upbeat and fast with a music track to match.

UCA Promotional Video-
This is fast moving with an energetic sound track, showing a lot of students but mainly basing the video around their work. Like all the videos it starts with the logo of the institution.

St Machar Academy Promotional Film

Up beat music, shows all the classes and the pupils walking around. Some shots are sped up to make faster but in some parts do not fit in with the music as the shots are slow and edited slowly. They have included many POV shots as to make it more interesting.

PQA promotional video teaser

This is a short video that shows some of the activities happening at the PQA, it has fast paced music and always has something happening. It has an upbeat vibe and works very well with the music.

From this research I have decided I need to think about-

  • Beginning with the PQA logo
  • Have fast paced music
  • Have the locations but make the film quick and exciting
  • Get lots of the classes with footage of lots of movement

Studio Production- Briefing Notes Research

As Assistant Producer I need to create the briefing notes for the presenter to read over to become more familiar with facts. All that I have researched is relevant to the script and hopefully will allow the presenter to understand where the story has come from and to have back ground information to expand their knowledge.

Domestic Violence-
Claire's Law-
  •     The Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme goes live nationwide on 08 March 2014, giving members of the public a ‘right to ask’ Police where they have a concern that their partner may pose a risk to them or where they are concerned that the partner of a member of their family or a friend may pose a risk to that individual.
  • ·      If an application is made under the scheme, Police and partner agencies will carry out checks and if they show that the partner has a record of abusive offences, or there is other information to indicate that there may be a risk from the partner, the Police will consider sharing this information.
  • ·      To make an application people need to go to a police station themselves where police staff will make details of the enquiry. They will then create a safe means of contacting you. They will need you name, DOB and address. (Met Police )
  • ·      At least 1,335 disclosures have been made so far, police figures obtained by the Press Association show. (26th Jan 2015 BBC)

Violence against Men
Statistics for Domestic Violence in the UK (http://www.lwa.org.uk/understanding-abuse/statistics.htm)-

  • Will affect 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in their lifetime
  • Leads to, on average, two women being murdered each week and 30 men per year
  • Accounts for 16% of all violent crime (Source: Crime in England and Wales 04/05 report), however is still the violent crime least likely to be reported to the police.
  • Has more repeat victims than any other crime
  • Is the single most quoted reason for becoming homeless (Shelter, 2002)
  • In 2010 the forced marriage unit responded to 1735 reports of possible forced marriages
  • 38% of domestic violence is against men

Social Experiments-

Graffiti-

The Street Art Tour- Free Tours By Foot

·      London

·      Name-Your-Own-Price, pay what ever you decide

·      London Graffiti and Street Art tour
    “Alternative, trendy, and recently gentrified, London's East End is one of the most vibrant and exciting areas in town - and Free Tours By Foot is ready to help you discover the art, history, and outrageous stories that help make the East End the vibrant part of London that nobody wants to miss!”-Tour’s description (Free Tours By Foot)

Cost of Tagging-
  •      'Graffiti' refers to any drawings, scribbles, messages or 'tags' that are painted, written or carved on walls and other surfaces.
  •      Graffiti is vandalism and it's become a really expensive problem. Removing graffiti costs the UK over £1 billion a year. We and other agencies have to remove graffiti from walls, street furniture, telephone boxes, bus shelters, monuments and even gravestones. (http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200089/street_cleaning/422/graffiti)
  •      Figures estimate that the cost of graffiti removal throughout the country is over £1bn a year, with the London Underground alone earmarking up to £10m per annum to replace glass tagged with unattractive markings.(http://www.rentokil-hygiene.co.uk/news/2014/graffiti-removal-costs.html)
  •      Is part of the Criminal Damage 1971 Act
  •     As well as Anti-Social Behavior 2003

Becoming Legal-
  •      There are ‘free walls’ that mean graffiti will be legal on them (http://www.thesite.org/crime-and-safety/in-trouble/graffiti-9130.html)

Banksy-

Believed to be from Bristol and born in 1974 http://www.biography.com/people/banksy-20883111

Photoshop-
The shocking truth-

  • Medical associations believe there is a link between the alterations made by photoshop that are unrealistic. This unrealistic view appropriate body image- especially among impressionable children and adolescents.
  • A large body of literature links exposure to media-propagated images of unrealistic body image to eating disorders and other child and adolescent health problems.
‘Dying to be Barbie’- “The numbers are stunning: Four out of five 10-year-olds say that they're afraid of being fat. 42% of girls in first through third grade wish they were thinner. And, half of girls aged 9 or 10 claim that they feel better about themselves when they're dieting.” (Rehabs )

Justin Bieber Photo Shopped-

  • An estimated 10-15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are male.
  • Men are less likely to seek treatment for eating disorders because of the perception that they are “women's diseases.”
  • Among gay men, nearly 14% appeared to suffer from bulimia and over 20% appeared to be anorexic. (ANAD)

Dove Self Esteem Project-

  • “Our mission is to improve the self-esteem of more than 15 million girls and young women by 2015” Dove website
  • 'Our own global research shows that only 4% of women worldwide consider themselves beautiful. and this anxiety begins at an early age'. Dove
  • “The Dove Self-Esteem Project was founded in 2004 to ensure the next generation of women grows up to be happy and content, free from misconstrued beauty stereotypes and the burden of self-doubt. The Project delivers self-esteem education to children (primarily girls) aged 8-17 years old through lessons in schools, workshops for youth groups, and digitally across a number of channels.” Dove (http://selfesteem.dove.co.uk/)
  • They offer a wide range of articles to help support the next generation of people.
  • They talk about the issue with the media on their website, supporting the view that celebrities being edited cause people to look at an unrealistic ideal.

The Ideal Body Type-

      • Approximately 95% of women are unhappy with their bodies and diet to achieve their ideal body type.
      • Only 5% of women process the body type that is portrayed by the American media
      • Studies show that the more reality TV someone is to watch the more likely they find apparence important.
      • 95% of women have eating disorders between the age of 12-25
      • Only 10% of people with eating disorders seek help https://www.dosomething.org/facts/11-facts-about-body-image
      • An study conducted by the Badley University (USA) found that after reading a womens magazine that 70% of women felt depressed.

      Voting

      How many young people are interested in voting-

      • Only 41% percent of first time voters are certain they will be voting in the coming election
      • Young people are not voting as they believe that the government does not understand them, 58% feeling that the current Prime Minister, David Cameron does not understand them well, 34% not at all, 17% fairly well and 6% very well.
      • The leader believed to connect with the younger voters most is, Ed Miliband, 41% fairly well, very well 8%, 39% he does not understand them very well or at all 19%.
      • But different areas provide different statistics
      • The issues being put forward to being voted forward are not what the first time voters are interested in.
      • Asked to name the issues they were most concerned about, 69% included the cost of living, 62% affordable housing, 58% unemployment and the same proportion said the NHS.
      • Despite low levels of engagement, overall first-time voters are almost twice as likely to support Labour as Conservative. In December the Green party was on 22 per cent among 18-24 year-olds – tied with the Conservatives for second place. Date of May elections-
      Thursday 7th May General Elections

      South Thanet Information (UK Polling Report )-

      A coastal seat, snaking around the eastern coast of the Isle of Thanet and then south into Dover to include the historic Cinque port of Sandwich and the rural villages inland from it, including Ash and Wingham. The main centres of population is the ferry port, fishing town and coastal resort of Ramsgate, the more genteel seaside town of Broadstairs and Cliftonville, a residential part of Margate. Thanet suffers from the economic problems often associated with declining seaside towns, and has some of the most deprived wards in the otherwise generally affluent Kent.

      • Historically is a conservative area

      Al Murray’s Politics- (New Statesman )

      He's offering a bunch of "common sense policies for common sense people", including:

      • "1p a pint" and "1p a glass of wine (fruit-based drink for the ladies) too".
      • The pound will be revalued as being worth £1.10.
      • People turning up at A&E when it's not an accident or an emergency will "be sent to a random hospital department" to be treated instead.
      • Deliberately making the UK "a whole lot worse" so that immigrants stop wanting to come to "the greatest nation on Earth".
      • Bricking up the Channel Tunnel. ("With British bricks, of course - but probably have to get some Poles in to do it. Common sense.").
      • School places allocated by "street raffle".
      • Alex Salmond to be made first minister of Norwich, "so he can understand what being ignored by the rest of the country is really like".
      • Pledging that the UK will leave Europe by 2025, and the Solar System by 2050.
      • National service, "but only for those who don't want to do it"

      These are the end result that were then sent to Jamie Terry the presenter, they include some website names so that if Jamie would like to he could look more into what the notes say.

      Professional Practice- Promotional Film Research

      If Google-ing promotional films for school's this is the first website that comes up-

      Professional Practice- Getting the ideas

      After I had emailed Verity she sent me an email back giving me the answers to my questions ask previously, she emailed back with some very helpful facts.

      There are no consent forms needed as they all sign something when they join. You can come in to academy anytime and film we run 10.30-1.30 every Saturday at Tunbridge Wells this will give you an over view of what we do for your your script.
      • Does it need to be 2 mins? Whatever you think
      • Do we need to use the same music as you have used in previous videos? no
      • When is the performance of Lion King taking place? May 2nd
      • How could we arrange having a short interviews with parents? Yes
      • Could we have some of the lesson plans? (to create the script) How to do envisage the lesson plans creating a script? Then I can send the right ones.

      For the script I will be using the answers as to improve what I have already written. I will also need to reply to Verity to get the lesson plans we will need.
      This is the email I sent as to ask for a few things;

      Hello,
      We would like the lesson plans for March 7th, as I would like to come in and film the location (before students get there), the warm up of the poppets, the students in the drama studio. And then maybe the film class with the teachers. We were also thinking that we could come back 2 weeks later on the 21st March to film anything we have missed. If you are also in on the 21st we could show you the footage so far.

      Thank you
      Roxanne Meats

      Studio Production- Warm Up Act

      Dave was able to put me in contact with a person who could be our warm up act so I sent them an email-

      Dear Robyn,
      Dave Chawner has suggested you as a warm up act for our studio production of What You Sayin' on the 25th March 2015, this would be in the afternoon. We would like you to come in before that date as we can meet you and talk to you more about the show and what we would like you to do.

      If you could make the filming date that would be a good start, if you can please email me back with question and so that we can arrange a day that you can come in.

      Kind Regards
      Roxanne Meats

      Assistant Producer

      The reply;

      Hi Roxanne,

      Yes, I am definitely up for doing the warm-up. I am free all day the 25th of March, but would need to be in Clapham Junction by 8:15PM. I hope this still works.

      I am actually in Newcastle the later part of this week and then off to the US until March 10th. However, I can fit in a time then to come into the studio. If you need to meet me before then, I can try to work something out Wednesday, but it would be time dependent.

      Let me know what works for you. Also, feel free to call me tomorrow if that is easier: 078 3879 0961.

      Cheers,
      robyn

      I rang Robyn to ask if she would like to come in on the 13th March to meet me and the Producer, this is so we can figure out if she is the right person for us.

      Professional Practice- Research for Books

      While looking for more information into my Dissertation proposal I decided to look for a few online books, these are books on google that will help me talk about serial killers and the audience;

      Killers being Celebrities;

      Does violence effect the audience?

      Why do we watch Killers?

      I found some more books on the e-library;

       Viewers and how they watch the television;
      Killers becoming famous;

       How violence fits into society;
      The law in comparison to fictional stories;

      Studio Production- Audition Day

      Today we had 5 auditions, 3 successful panelists, 1 unsuccessful and 1 potential presenter.

      Here is my Score sheet for the panelists, the last three scored highly due to their controversial opinions. The other group members present may have marked differently but this is how I decided which people I liked.

      All candidates where good to talk to and lively, the ones pick were the ones that stood out and made us want to join in on their discussion.

      Studio Production- Dave audition

      Today we had a audition with a potential anchor over Skype. We asked him several questions and talked about different aspects from the show. I wrote notes during our interview as to determine his personality against others;

      Graffiti-

      • For, it is artistic but has a stigma
      • Increasing aesthetics in run down areas
      • If tagging was legal then is less likely as the 'thrill' is taken away
      Politics-
      • No political leaning
      • Excited for general election
      • "Not all politics is for everyone"
      • Yes votes because how else will there be change
      Photoshop-
      • It's wrong but the argument does not go far enough as people need to think of society
      • What can we do about it? (society and why people need to be skinny)
      • Younger generations need help in society and moving into adult life
      Claire's Law-
      • Not heard of
      • Should people be allowed to move on from their mistakes?
      • Vigilantism
      Anchor-
      • Rouges- avoid screaming, not to get angry, impartial and use being nice
      • Talk Back- has experience and is excited
      • Experience- Stand up, host events, multi cam and auto cue
      After Monday 9th Auditions I sent this email to Dave for more information as well as to inform him that we are not decided yet on the presenters role.

      Hello,
      Sorry for not getting back to you on Friday, I was wondering if you could send me the contact information of the people you mentioned during the interview as I would like to contact them (graffiti and warm up act). We are currently still having interviews for presenters, but we would like you to still send us your sizes. We will be discussing with our tutor the viability of the rehearsals and what we can do to hopefully improve the situation.
      Kind Regards
      Roxanne Meats

      To update Dave on Jaime becoming our presenter I sent the following email;

      Dear Dave,

      To keep you updated I'm sorry but due to not being able to rehearse with you we have decided to give the role of presenter to someone who is able to make rehearsal days. However this does not mean that we would not like you involved, we would like you to be a VT presenter. Going out on location with a team to produce helpful and informative work, we like your personality and think it could add to the story.

      If you are still interested in being part of the project, please get back to me.
      Kind Regards
      Roxanne Meats

      Studio Production- Politics Advertisement

      While trying to contact the politics students at Kent University we were asked to put together an advertisement to go into their news letter on Friday. This is what my and Helen came up with;

      Dear Politics Students,

      We are looking for a well informed student that will be able to talk on camera about the importance of voting, at the age of being allowed to vote. We would like someone who is not currently a part of a political party and is neutral, this should allow them to talk about parties freely. We will be talking about current news in the political world such as Al Murray's involvement in the South Thanet election, whilst looking at the involvement of Neil Farage in the Thanet election. As well as lowering the voting age, if this would impact the amount of people likely to vote.

      If you are interested in being involved in the show please email me on rmeats@students.ucreative.ac.uk

      Thank you
      Roxanne Meats
