Digital News- Rough Cut review

While in class watching the rough cut it was pointed out that the reporter and the anchor do not match in style. Our reporter Mark is casual and relaxed, even conversational with the audience. Whereas our Anchor Ren, although language used was conversation the constant looking at the paper is making concentrating on what she is saying is taken away. We have decided to do a re-shoot with Ren in which we will use an auto-cue app on the iPad and hold it near the camera so it will appear as if Ren is talking to the camera/audience.

Digital News- Script

This is the script with the trolling story almost complete it has the 5 points that are needed that are the ones to do with trolling and the prevention. I found most of these points with the help of a police website, NSPCC and CyberSmile.

Here is the research that we did before creating the script;
This is the script so far with the added 5 points;

Digital News- Rough Cut

We have some critics of the rough cut before we even hand it in;

  • Music is too loud
  • Ren is too quiet
  • Green screen work is not finished
  • 'Split screen' graphics are not needed
  • Vox pops sound is off
  • Bono part has sound for a dew seconds but then the sound goes as he talks making it a harsh sound cut
  • No end anchor
Most of the issues are on sound, I have expressed these issues with my group but Andrei has reassured me that in the next cut will be better.

Digital News- Social Media Update

While Andrei was completing the rough cut i decided to make sure the social media side odour digital news was constantly up to date. Mark was able to create The logo through photoshop and then I went through and made sure it was on all the accounts.

Instagram;

Twitter;

 Facebook;

Photoshop;

Digital News- Hang out

We had a hang out on Thursday 30th October in the morning to know how much we needed to do before the formative hand in.

I wrote done in brackets next to the ones I had completed, my main list was the writing in pink but I did do some other things.

Digital News- Social Media

As we are meant to be a digital news channel I thought it may be important to start social media accounts, we have created our own YouTube channel with our email and now I have created a Twitter, Instagram and Facebook account. All of our accounts are waiting to be posted in but all have the admins of the whole group therefore everyone has access.

The descriptions on the website are a bit bare at the moment and I still need to reference the other networking sites that we are on. I haves tried to link the social media sites but I am unsure of my success.

Digital News- Research

While looking into what could be advised by councillors we found that the person I originally contacted suggested we turn to online sources to have a look into the issue. We decided to carry on looking at the internet but I found an poster on the UCA Rochester campus about bullying/harassment, I sent an email to the first name on the list;

'Dear Mark Wells,

I am doing a university project called digital news, on of our news stories is looking at cyber bulling and 'trolling' online, I was hoping you could give me some tips about how to handle/avoid these types of issues or what you would recommend someone to do. As this is bulling/harassment I thought you would be able to help, if not please can you suggest another place for this information.

Kind Regards
Roxanne Meats'

Hopefully they respond to the email with some relevant information if not there are more addresses available and some phone numbers.

Looking into the internet side of things I found that the information was the same and slightly irrelevant, I went through the articles collected online, deleted those that were mainly options and wrote the key points of the others under the web address in bullet points.

Digital News- Development in Story

As we decided to talk to Helen about our trolling story as I found that the script seemed to be lacking something and after having a chat we decided that we have all this information but not angle so it was just a story describing something. So we decided that as a group we would look into how to help people stay safe online.
We decided to email the UCA to ask for some advice;
Hello,
I was wondering if you could help me with my university project as I am talking about people who have been online and have received distressing messages online. I was hoping you could tell us some advice that you would give to someone who have been trolled, I am not asking for anyones personal cases but I would just like to know what advice you would give them. A small list of precautions that could be taken would be appreciated.
Thank you
Roxanne Meats

We will also be trying to talk to child line and their press office, this is the short message that I sent to the press office over an online form;

"We are creating a university project on trolling in which we are trying to show tips to help with people that have been trolled. We are doing this as part of a news story and I would like for a councillor to hopefully give us some helpful tips that can help those affected by trolling."

Fiction Adaptation- Post Modernism

Even though Post Modernism is not directly to do with my essay I have found learning about it to be interesting and to help me think of ways to look differently at my essay and what I will be writing about.
In general I think my essay needs these aspects;

  • Audience
  • Genre
  • Modern Dilemmas
These will be related to my case study of Poirot and if the integrity of the work is kept or if the adaptation takes away parts of the book that make the story.

Digital News- Finding a reporter

I am at the moment going through the process of trying to find a reporter for our package news story, this has lead me to contact the university of Kent to ask them if they have any journalist students that are interested to come and film on Monday 27th October but at the moment they are not giving me much information.

Andy is very interested and says that he would like to be the reporter but as he is the camera man I would rather he stayed as his original role, if he decides that he more interested than the reporter that we may find then we will see what his camera presence is like.

Digital News- Green Screen practice

Today before doing the green screen with Ren, we decided to have a few short practices,  we were looking at the images to see how they came out on camera in this shot not all the green is the same colour.

Andrei and Andy did the set up to make sure when Ren arrived that we would be ready, but because we were filming through a window due to the small room it seems that there are some issues with reflection.

Digital News- Research on Trolls

Andrei and I have done some research for our new story about internet trolls, we have loads of references to different internet pages in the document below, it is also available to the other people in our group.

Internet Trolling Story

Digital News- Anchor

After thinking who we would like to have as a anchor on our channel we decided that Ren would fit the part well and so we decided to ask her to be part of the news. She said that she would like to, but while filming we forgot to give Ren a clear sense of what she needed to read, therefore she ended up reading part of the script that was not needed and missed a bit that was.

Digital News- Troll stories

Here is another Troll story from Fox news in which I want to watch to see how they report on trolls and what language they use i.e. menacing, lurking, online cruelty, sometimes they go to far.

They start with lots of cuts and parts of the story that they are going to show and then move on to the YouTube videos with people expressing their opinions on trolls. They then use a case study in which the girl says about what she personally thinks a troll is. Using references as professional trolls and that trolling is just part of the internet landscape. It feels like the anchors are saying things instead of the case study implying that they did not get her to say what they needed. Ending with what should you do if you are trolled.

Here is another story from Sky News about trolling.

They set the story off straight away in front of the women they are questioning, they launch into questioning about the Twitter account and the 'trolling' that she had done, they confront her on the actions she has taken. They move on to graphics of the Twitter accounts, and the abuse that is aimed at the Mccanns, they highlight some of the Twitter quotes. They move on through the case study into how different people are trolling. They move onto legal action, they also almost advertised the book produced about the Mccanns. They use the reporter to go through the Twitter comments, he has physical copies of the Twitter comments. They use the reference of if the people were to shout these things in the street that the police would get involved.

Digital News-Rough cut

Andrei Allen cut together the rough cut of our live, this has a few issues items of we have not yet inserted graphics but they will be inserted closer to the time. I am not to keen on the vox pops as I believe they relate to each other to much and that we have more of a range of opinions that relate but are not the same. I have on the transcripts highlighted the best bits but the ones picked I feel relate to much and are making the same point over and over. I have talked to Andrei Allen and had a chat about what I wanted changed about the Vox pops, to take out the female and put a different person between the two males.

Fiction Adaptation- Contact with British Legion

After a phone conversation with my contact at the British Legion I decided to email him to make sure I have the timings correct.
"Hello,
This is a follow up email from our conversation on the phone, I have decided any images I would like of the cathedral I may be able to get another time. I will come to Rochester's parade, at 10:30 I will go to Rochester and set up filming, if you wouldn't mind informing people that I will be filming around the memorial that would be very helpful. I will bring a small camera as not to have to many distractions and so that I will be able to film and not get in anyone sway.
Thank you for letting me come along and film the parade, I will hopefully be able to see you there.
Roxanne Meats"

I have emailed him this information and I will look into contacting the cathedral so that I may be able to take images inside before the parade. I will be using the DSLR with external sound, I am hoping to ask a couple of people to help me on my shoot so that I will have a second pair of eyes.

Digital News- Story 2

Our story has changed from a dog attack story to a story about internet trolls.
BBC have written an article about the resent change in law that sparked my idea to do the story on internet trolls, this story needs a case study and some actuality. Andrei will be contacting some people that he knows to talk about internet trolling and their experience.

These are the stories I looked at before we decided on the troll story;

More research needs to be done into trolling and victims.

Although I like the new story the original story should have been revised without prompt as it is unrelated to our branding, this story fits in with our brand better.

Digital News- Call Sheet

This is the call sheet for the shoot at Canterbury carried out by Andrei Allen and Mark Cooper, to film the live.

Digital News- Audience

News can be said to be shaped by its audience, there have been studies that suggest that audiences don't pay attention to the news as much as other television programs, this leaves it hard to see what the audience would like to watch and what news impacts them. The audience tend to find news stories interesting if they are human interest stories, show conflict or controversy, cover unusual happenings, cover events that are new and are happening now and are culturally and geographically relevant.
Television news events have 'news value' if:

  • they contain good pictures
  • they contain short, dramatic occurrences that can be sensationalised
  • they have novelty value
  • they are open to simple reporting
  • they occur on a grand scale
  • they are negative or contain violence, crime, confrontation or catastrophe
  • they are either highly unexpected, or contain things that one would not expect to happen
  • they have meaning or relevance to the audience
  • similar events are already in the news
  • they contain elite people or nations or they allow an event to be reported in personal or human interest terms.
While thinking of these factors in term of writing my script and researching stories I need to look at stories in a slightly different way, as in more short and simple for the audience.

Fiction adaptation - Tutorial

Today was the tutorial day for our essays, I found that I need to start my research big in terms of adaptation and that I also do need to look into the genre of the detective style in which programs and created for. To look at the style of genres is to see how they are set up and their conventions, as how they start, how the story carrys on and how the case is solved.
I have decided to do more general research on Poirot including when it was aired, the first episode 08/01/1989, and the last 13/11/2013. This gives the time period of the series of 25 years all the cases that were written by Agatha Christie have been adapted for television, the first episode was not the first Poirot novel but one of the short stories by Agatha Christie. It was originally published in 1923 for newspapers.

The mysterious affair at styles is a "flash back" episode written in 1920 and adapted for television in 1990, the first and this episode is related in the way Poirot is introduced, dramatised by Clive Exton he dramatised 20 episodes of Poirot.

Digital news- Change

Instead of out original package being a dog story it will instead be a new story featuring a technological aspect. I only found on article in each paper. This does lead me to wonder about if the audiences of these papers would be interested in technology or if they are more interested in human interest stories. The Times has 4 smaller papers on the inside where it goes through travel, sport, a saturday review and a weekend paper. It mostly talks about the arts and politics. I believe that the target audience is 25-45. I looked around online and found this website that supports my assumption. News Commercial. The Independents shrunk down news paper "the i"is assumed to be a younger audience as its cheap concise and all the articles and short and to the point. Neither of these newspapers today have included much on the technological side of the news making a gap in the market.

The change in the story does mean that there needs to be new stories and means more research needs to be done. I will be looking into the different stories to see if I can have a story that will be a good story that my group will find interesting as well as our audience.

Digital News- News Room

Today I went to ITV's news room, to apply for this I had to send my CV to someone from the newsroom. They selected me to go in for the open day on the 16th October, the news room includes going to visit the ITV studios for a tour and a series of tasks depending on what we would like to do in the future. When I gave my short biography to the peeople from the studio it included that I would like to be a producer. In the studios we were able to see the gallery and look around the studio where the presenters and cameras were. In the newsroom we saw some of the editors going through the story's before the live was made. I was able to go into the gallery and adjust the cameras with supervision, I used the auto cue and was able to keep in time with the reporter saying the words and we had a chance to be the presenter but I did not like that idea so I was allowed to spend longer in the gallery. I was also go into the weather studio and read the weather off the screen and we were able to go into the small gallery to see it being produced.

Digital news- workshop

Today was the after effects workshop and we were learning how to use the program. I only stayed for half of the workshop as I did not take much of the information in, the work I did I need refreshing and I will have to go on Lynda to help my learning as I could not keep up today.

Fiction Adaptation- Script draft 2

In my second draft I have tried to write with the actions of the narrator more involved, so that I can see how it will shape up, I will need to draw a story board to be able to look completely into the imagery.

Digital News- Transcripts for Vox Pops

After the Vox Pops were done I was asked to do the Transcripts ready for editing, these are the scripts before we look into which parts will be sound bites but I would like to discuss it with the group before I start highlighting.

Fiction adaptation- Tutorial

While having a tutorial with Helen we came up with lots of ideas on what I should look at, we decided I should look at monologues from Talking Heads anyhow I would like the narrator to tell the poem. Also we looked into having two story lines running next to each other to tell a story of both the parade and the narrator getting ready for the parade.

Fiction Adaptation- Monologues

While looking into my fiction adaptation film we decided to look into how I would like my poem to be presented by the narrator/actor. Looking into how some things such as monolouges can be used with the actor talking to the camera. I am not sure this is what I would like but here is an example of how it could be done.

I like the setting of the particular monologue but I feel that I do not want the 4th wall to be broken so I would like my character to not be talking to the camera but for it to seem as if the actor was talking to themselves as if reciting the poem to him self. While the actor is saying the poem I would like to portray him getting ready to go to the remembrance parade and therefore have between clips footage of the remembrance parade.

Fiction Adaptation- Actor

After having a tutorial with Helen it has occurred to me that I will need an actor for the narration role, this will need to be a elderly man that can portray sadness and remembrance.
I have put an add onto star now to look for actors the date it runs out is the 6th October just after the deadline for the essay of Fiction Adaptation so that I can start looking at filming straight away.

Digital News- Teasers

For our news teasers we are trying to look at different news stories and get stories that are less important than our main story. I am currently looking at the stories from the Kent Messenger, this is what I have written for my script so far using other sources to create my work.
"In our main stories, Apple users are surprised by a publicity stunt that resulted in their privacy being breached, Strood cat owners find themselves worrying for the pets safety as feral dogs are still at large.
More cats go missing in Strood as feral dog pack roam the streets.
Nurses in Maidstone on strike due to the denial of a 1% pay rise.
A man has been charged with two counts of kidnap in Gillingham.
In entertainment news-
Kent’s X Factor contestants have been made it through their first live show."

Update on the Teaser

In todays main stories-
[beat]
Apple users are left confused after the discovery of a new album on their devices
[beat]
New punishments are to be enforced for cyber-bullies and internet “trolls.”
[beat]
SnapChat has been hacked leaking multiple photo’s of the users.
[beat]
And a heart broken boyfriend auctions holiday romance on eBay.

Digital news-Workshops

While doing the workshop in the studio today I was the floor manager for the production. Although I do not think I did the best job I enjoyed the experience. I learnt that the floor manager is the directors go to person on the floor on the set and there fore is telling other crew members what they need to do and when although it was a bit harder for me and Andrei to communicate without our voices are being recorded, we managed to try get as much as possible out of each other to try make the production smoother. I think Andrei would have been a better as the floor manger as he was constantly running around trying to talk to people and to help.
 Here are some photos of the work:

Digital News- Photographs taken on shoot

Here are the images Andy Cox took during our shooting day 10.10.14. Most of the photos of myself are me and Andy looking at locations and what the back ground would be like. We used the extra camera to look around the town of Canterbury and at the locations we could use for interviewing.
